It’s probably been like 2 years since I last updated my author photos so this weekend I pulled out my tripod (and my husband as a stand in 😂) and took some pics. I ended up having so much fun and went wayy overboard but here are some of my faves. And I’ll probably share some more with time 🌸

Glimpses of Autumn from afternoon walks 🍂

When I got back from my Clarens Writers Retreat, I was really blue about leaving all that beauty behind and being back in my boring old town. But God has been showing me these beautiful glimpses of autumn in my own neighborhood the past week as a reminder that I just need to open my eyes to His beauty around me 🍁

Writing essentials 🕯️

I’ve always been someone who loves routines and sameness (hello autism 😂) and my writing space is the same. Some things make it easier, like my second screen and keyboard and candles / mood lighting, but I can write without them. But I also have certain things I cannot write without:
• a warm drink (coffee in the morning, tea at night)
• water
• noise-cancelling headphones (and my writing playlists)
• hand lotion and lip balm
• a fidget for when I need to think

And most importantly … SCRIVENER. I feel like I haven’t sung it’s praises in a hot minute, but seriously - I started using the writing software a few years ago and now I can’t exist without it. I’ve usually got all my notes and word count tracker open on one screen, and my draft in the other. Also, I love the different themes and colours available because as we all know by now - I’m obsessed with colour coding my books.

What are the things you can’t do without in your writing or work space?

Net minder as ’n jaar gelede stuur ek vir Martelize Faber, een van my Inklings (my groepie skryfvriendinne), ’n boodskap: “Ons moet weer op ’n skrywerswegbreek gaan. Net ‘n klein groepie. Iewers met ’n mooi uitsig. En ek wil tyd hê om actually te skryf.”

En toe op Vrydag 24 April, na amper ’n jaar se beplanning en breinstorm en reël, arriveer ons klein groepie skrywersvriendinne in Clarens vir een van die wonderlikste weke ooit.

Ons begin elke oggend met ’n oordenking en saambid tydens brunch, skryf die meeste van die dag, en eindig elke aand met ’n heerlike aandete en refleksie oor ons skryfvordering – wat in diep hartsgeselse verander. Tussendeur die skryf, kuier ons om die kaggel of terwyl ons die pragtige natuurreservaat se staproetes aandurf. Twee van die skrywers vier verjaarsdae. Ons woon die Clarens Kunstefees by waar ons boekpraatjies bywoon, draf die dorpie se winkeltjies deur, eet roomys en drink koffie, en sluit die laaste aand af by Mosaics Pizzeria.

’n Week was amper te kort, behalwe die feit dat ons almal ons geliefdes gemis het, maar ons het die mooiste herinneringe aan ’n salige en geseënde week waar ons nie net vordering gemaak het met ons skryfdoelwitte nie, maar ook met hartsvriendinne kon deel wat in ons lewens aangaan en werklik die Here se teenwoordigheid voel.

Galentines cookie decorating with the girls 🍪🩷 Such a fun morning of chatting and snacking and getting icing everywhere 😂 This was only my second time decorating cookies but I don’t think they turned out too badly for an amateur.

W made me the sweetest breakfast, but we’re saving the big celebrations for our 5 year wedding anniversary on the 20th.

Last year was hard. Challenging, turbulent… all the synonyms. Oftentimes I just hid away from the world and went into survival mode. Everything felt bleak.

But the last few weeks, Hope has been strongly on my mind. God has been reminding me about this: even during hard times, we can rejoice in hope because of Him. Because He saved us, because of all His promises. He will never leave me nor forsake me. When I am weak, he is strong. His grace is sufficient.

So for 2026, I’m going to try my best not to lose HOPE.

My world pretty much revolves around these two lately 😂 They exhaust me and give me life, exasperate me and make me laugh. Often all of these within the span of 5 minutes. My house will never be clean again, but it will always be filled with love and fluff.

One of these days I will hopefully have a writing update for you guys again, but for now I’m just surviving until I go on leave - and these two are keeping me busy in between 😂

I’ve really been wanting to start posting more often again, but the end of year burnout is hitting HARD.

My health hasn’t been great this year and I still don’t know exactly why. Mostly I’m just tired all. the. time. I’ve also been short of breath and having heart palpitations since this time last year. I saw a cardiologist in February, did a load of expensive tests that the medical aid did NOT pay for, only to basically get told that I’m just overweight and anxious. Next week, I’m seeing my gynaecologist (after waiting 4 months for an appointment) to discuss a host of other symptoms… such as infertility. A hard word to admit out loud.

I’m just so ready for this year to end 😅 I just want a lil break. Who’s with me?

Resting is not quitting.

I have a complicated relationship with consistency and being productive vs resting. I mean, who doesn't?

My goal at the beginning of the year was to be CONSISTENT with writing. "Write every day" - as inspired by Stephen King.

And everything was great for a while; but then things started getting rough at work and I became more and more drained. I would sit at my computer at night and stare at the screen and try to will my brain to work, but just get nothing done. I tried to force it, telling myself it was a matter of being disciplined and avoiding distractions. But the less I wrote, the more despondent and guilty I started feeling.

So I gave myself permission to rest, and I realised: resting is not the same as quitting.
Resting is a pause, not a stop.
A comma, not a period.

I still think writing every day is a really wonderful goal to have, but I also need to remind myself that writing is not the only thing I've got going on in my life. I work a full time job that gets really stressful at times. We have high energy dogs that require training and attention. I still have a social life and a husband and a house. I love writing SO MUCH and it's a high priority for me, but I don't write in a bubble. Everything else going on in my life affects my energy levels too.

So this is your reminder (and mine):
It’s okay to take a break.
It’s okay to rest.
It’s temporary — you’ll get back to what you love.

The second slide is a quote a friend sent me earlier this week and it just fit in so perfectly with what's been on my mind lately.

SHE’S BACK! SHE’S ALIVE! She’s running on fumes, but she’s alive.

I accidentally-on-purpose took the whole October off from social media, writing and, well, everything except surviving. The last few months have been extremely busy and even turbulent, especially at work. On top of that, every weekend has been filled with plans and events and while it’s been great seeing friends and family, I’m running realllllly low on energy. The end of year burnout is taking its toll, but I thought it was about time to show my face again!

1) I got my ATKV Woordveertjie for Foto’s & fairy lights! I still can’t believe I’ve won one for each of my books. What makes this prize even more special, is that the winner is chosen by kids and teenagers - the very people I write for.
2) Baking, embroidery, walks - what I’m doing when I’m not working. Also, a loooot of binge rewatching my favourite shows: The Rookie, Stranger Things, GOT. Whenever I’m in a dip, I find a lot of comfort in the familiar. I haven’t been reading very much either.
3) The Life of a Showgirl release was a MOMENT! I had a very fun small release party with my bestie @sandsandstories , even though we didn’t take a single photo together … typical. I did take pics of our snacks though! And then Walt and I went to watch the movie later the weekend.
4) More pics from movie date night
5) Puppy chaos! Freya has been so much fun to have around and to watch her grow. She’s such a smart, independent girl - and so busy and energetic, haha. Nina has been … adjusting. They looove playing together, but Nina isn’t loving sharing the attention, haha.
6) Some adorable moments of peace in between the chaos.
7) Freya gave us a scare a few weeks ago when she got really sick with gastro. We thought it might be parvo at first because she hasn’t had all her shots yet, but luckily it was just a bug. One night at the vet on an IV and a bunch of emergency vet bills later, she’s back to her bouncy, happy self.
8) And just to balance out the new puppy, here’s my first child looking cute as fluff.

Hi, hello, how’s life? It’s been a hot minute since I posted anything because *gestures vaguely* LIFE. And the longer I don’t post, the more intimidating it feels 😂

So this is just to break the ice and say I’m still here. I’m still writing. I might actually have some good bookish news to share soon 😏💙

I’ve been busy with work (it’s been a wild year), I’ve been reading and baking, and I’ve also been doing a lot of training and having fun with Nina. We recently started doing agility just for fun and we even had a local Dog Show a week ago (raising funds for a shelter) that Nina did AMAZING at! My competitive streak definitely showed up strong but the most important part is Nina really enjoys it, and it’s great physical and mental stimulation for her. Might post more about that soon …

Hi, hello, how’s life? It’s been a hot minute since I posted anything because *gestures vaguely* LIFE. And the longer I don’t post, the more intimidating it feels 😂

So this is just to break the ice and say I’m still here. I’m still writing. I might actually have some good bookish news to share soon 😏💙

I’ve been busy with work (it’s been a wild year), I’ve been reading and baking, and I’ve also been doing a lot of training and having fun with Nina. We recently started doing agility just for fun and we even had a local Dog Show a week ago (raising funds for a shelter) that Nina did AMAZING at! My competitive streak definitely showed up strong but the most important part is Nina really enjoys it, and it’s great physical and mental stimulation for her. Might post more about that soon …

New hobby loading 🪡

After vehemently avoiding any hobbies involving needles and thread my entire life, the bug finally got me a while ago at a baby shower when all the guests had to embroider quilt squares for the baby 😂 I’ve been looking for something to do with my hands while watching TV or listening to audiobooks (or even while in coversations) that doesn’t involve staring at my phone screen.

So yesterday I went to the “wolwinkel” (yarn store) and got myself some supplies. I cut up one of my husbands old jeans to practice on and I’m having the best time 😂 Even now in the car on the way to visiting family on the farm - it’s giving me something to do.

Stay tuned to see if I make progress or lose the hyperfixation 🤭

As a writer I write for my readers, yes, but I also write for myself. For my inner child, my angry inner teenage girl … Books about girls who always feel different, who get the courage to escape from cults and the lies they were taught, who decide to fight for what they believe in. Books for the undiagnosed autistic and ADHD girl struggling with unseen anxiety and depression, always believing she’s not good enough.

I write for myself, and for the other girls like me.
